How to Cultivate the Skill of Well-Being
We all aspire to high levels of happiness, yet this is a goal that evades many of us. What should we know if we too aim to become a happy—or a happier—person? In this workshop, Dr. Pelin Kesebir will answer this question, relying on the latest findings from well-being research. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have a better sense of where well-being lies and how it can be cultivated through small, daily activities.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common and debilitating condition. Lifetime prevalence in the U.S. has been found to be 2.5% and OCD is considered a top 10 cause of disability by the World Health Organization. This presentation will use didactic training along with a question and answer session to explore what OCD is and what it is not. We will also include the similarities and differences regarding pediatric presentation of OCD and compare it to adults.
We will then differentiate OCD from anxiety and discuss when obsessive-compulsive symptoms warrant an actual diagnosis and what falls within the “normal range”. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will be explored regarding its impact on both the general population and OCD sufferers. Despite being common and debilitating, OCD is also very treatable when treated properly. The treatment of choice for OCD is a behavioral therapy technique known as exposure and ritual prevention (ERP). The last segment of this presentation will focus on practical strategies when working with someone with OCD and what the specific components of ERP are.
